Country Houses
From the days of the Norman conquest, when Norfolk was divided up into 800 acre manors as spoils of war for WIlliam's supporters, until the 18th century, some of the finest houses in all of England were built in this area.
From the ancient strongholds of Norwich Castle (built on the site of King Canute's original) and Castle Acre (near Swaffham) to the later and less martial additions of the likes of Sandringham there is a wealth of historical and architectural gems that are open to the public. From the 16th century the vast wealth of Norfolk's leading families was demonstrated in the building of impressive seats such as Blickling and Holkham Hall.
