Holkham

Holkham can be found along the coast road between Wells-next-the-Sea and Burnham Overy Staithe and is very much dominated by the magnificent stately home there, Holkham Hall. This is one of the principal Palladian houses of England and it sits in an attractive park with a herd of fallow deer (much like Houghton Hall near King’s Lynn). The estate also has numerous monuments, a lake and its own church; both the hall and the park are open to the public.

As well as the grand house, Holkham is also famous for its beach, most notably featured in last scene of the film ‘Shakespeare in Love’ where Gwyneth Paltrow is seen walking along the sand on her own towards the pine trees. Opposite The Victoria Hotel (named for Queen Victoria) is Lady Anne’s drive which crosses the salt marshes, to reach the beach which is fringed by pine woods and sand dunes. You could quite easily spend an entire day of your holiday here. The marshes are known for their population of pink-footed geese and the area has been designated as a National Nature Reserve.

From Holkham you have many more wonderful places to visit on your holiday in Norfolk – Burnham Market is a bustling hive of shops, galleries and wonderful places to eat (The Hoste Arms is renowned in the area and well worth a visit), further along the coastal road towards Cromer is Holt, a bustling Georgian town with a fabulous café called Byfords (which is also a delicatessen) and a couple of fish and chip shops too if you fancy something simple!

There are no end of activities to fill your weekend away here – or an entire fortnight with the family – and Kett Country Cottages will have the perfect accommodation to suit all your needs. From sailing to bird watching, painting to paintballing, golf to horse riding, seal trips to gourmet dining – there truly is something for everyone.
