Walking With The Wounded
Walking With The Wounded is a charity set up by our good friend in Norfolk, Ed Parker of Edward Parker Wines.
After the outstanding success of the North Pole expedition, Walking with the Wounded have set our sights higher for 2012 – to successfully summit Mount Everest and put 4 wounded servicemen on top of the world.
The expedition will consist of two parts, but each will be challenging in its own way. The first is the 7-day trek from Namche Bazaar in Eastern Nepal to Base Camp at 5380m – when up to 8 severely injured service personnel will overcome terrain that is a feat for even the fittest of trekkers. Then part of the expedition will continue on – for the assault on the summit.
Climbing Everest is one of the toughest challenges in adventure exploration: narrow ridges with 3km falls; altitude sickness and immense fatigue; unpredictable weather and sudden storms; precipitous climbing over ice-covered rocks; deep crevasses covered with treacherous snow bridges. It took 30 years of attempts to conquer the mountain, and over 200 people have failed to return from its jagged slopes.
With these obstacles to success, it is clear why any attempt on Everest is a phenomenal undertaking. But Walking With The Wounded will be doing it with 4 wounded servicemen. The challenge of ice-climbing and negotiating crevasses will be all the more insurmountable, as will the immense difficulty of daily tent-life: the drying of clothes, cooking of food and prevention of frostbite that is essential to keeping the body capable of this monumental task.
A team of determined, hardy and tenacious soldiers has been selected through interview, trials in the Brecon Beacons and technical climbing assessments around Mont Blanc. Their training continues with further work in the Alps and Himalayas, then months of conditioning in the British mountains before the departure for Nepal next May, and an expedition every bit as ground-breaking as those first ascents of 50 years ago.

Back To The Garden
Back to the Garden is founded, as it turns out, on a non-business-minded conception of what a food shop ought to offer. We have our own farm that grows its own organic vegetables and fruit, rears its own organic livestock which is allowed to ruminate on grass instead of milled concentrates. We pick crops by the day (by hand), drive them the ten minutes it takes to get down the A148 to a beautiful old threshing barn and lay them out in trugs and baskets for customers to experience at their best and freshest, still beaded with dew and with the rich smell of earth still on them.
The deli stocks a range of artisan cheeses, made in limited quantities from the milk of producers’ own animals, even a traditional Reggiana ‘red cow’ parmesan - the red cow, naturally enough, is famed for its lack of productivity as well as the taste of its cheese. There’s a butcher’s counter full of our organic meat, a selection of organic charcuterie and fresh meals and cakes created in our in-house kitchen.
Infinite care and equal amounts of money have been invested into making a shopping environment with integrity. Three years ago the barn doors were thrown open against warnings of severe misjudgment. Last year it won Best Farm Shop Award from the Eastern Daily Press. As of 8th November there’ll be an a la carte lunchtime menu focused on seasonal produce. Please come and visit us while you are staying in Norfolk and enjoy some truly delicious local produce – just one of the many things that make this part of the country well worth visiting.
Back to the Garden is situated just off the A148 in Letheringsett, near Holt.
