The old smuggling village of Thornham is about five miles north east of the seaside resort of Hunstanton. During the 18th and 19th centuries this was a popular place with smugglers as its secluded sand dunes and beaches meant their treasure could be easily hidden!
If you are interested in walking whilst on holiday here, there are twelve miles of waymarked footpaths known as the Thornham Walks which include a walled garden and a newly refurbished bird hide, and lead along to the Thornham Rock Trail and Victorian Folly. Equally perfect for bird watching enthusiasts, this is an area of natural beauty and miles of stunning salt water marshes. There is also a RSPB reserve at Titchwell which is just half a mile away.
The Orange Tree along the High Street and The Lifeboat Inn down by the marshes are two highly regarded pub restaurants which are both well worth a visit. After a day on the beach or on the golf course, what could be better than a delicious meal? If you are self-catering why not treat yourself to some fresh oysters from any number of local sellers – a delicious speciality from this part of the North Norfolk coast?
The larger seaside resort of Hunstanton is four miles away and inland is the charming village of Docking with a useful village stores.
