Farm shops in Norfolk

Clare 14 August 2018

Producer to plate, farm to fork, Norfolk is a heaven for lovers of local fare!

Norfolk, with its temperate climate and abundance of farms, is a veritable hamper of fresh, locally grown and raised produce. But where to find the finest food for your holiday cottage table?

Start by substituting supermarkets for straight-from-the-source farm shops and your taste buds will be celebrating flavour-rich fruit, vegetables and meat in no time.

You’ll notice farm shops across Norfolk, from small roadside stalls selling the day’s fresh harvest, to boutique businesses complete with cafés and artisan shops.

We’ve compiled a helpful list of our favourites where you’ll find a warm welcome and a wholesome selection of produce to choose from.

Back to the Garden

Letheringsett, Holt, North Norfolk NR25 7JJ

Fresh beef steak on a chopping board

A mouth-watering array of produce awaits at Back to the Garden. There’s organic beef and poultry raised on the adjoining farm, a choice of carefully selected British artisan cheeses, tracklements, and organic vegetables grown under the vast Norfolk skies. Complement your purchases with beer from local brewers, organic wine and a choice of pickles, conserves, pastries and fresh bread.

Browse nature’s bounty at your leisure and stop at the café/restaurant where you can enjoy a delicious meal or home-baked cake just a stone’s throw from where the ingredients were sourced. You can’t get fresher than that.

Doing exactly what it says on the tin, Farm to Fork and Fish sells fresh local produce, direct from Norfolk suppliers. The meat produce comes from their own Swannington Farm, fresh fish is sourced daily from along the coast and the deli selection includes Norfolk cheeses, homemade pies, quiches, sausage rolls and pates, as well as locally made artisan produce. It’s impossible to leave without a full basket!

Walsingham Farm Shops

Guild Street, Little Walsingham, Walsingham, Norfolk NR22 6BU

Norfolk Lavender, Lynn Road, Heacham, Norfolk PE31 7JE

Fresh vegetables - carrots, radishes, tomatoes and leeks

The Walsingham Farm Shops aim to make shopping for food a pleasurable experience, not only connecting customers with local suppliers and exquisite produce, but also celebrating the origins of food through watching it being made or sampling the wares on offer.

Their objective is to source at least 75% of their range from Norfolk and 95% from within the UK. The shops are housed within characterful converted barns, one a former grain store, the other at the famous Norfolk Lavender attraction. They also have an online shop and offer an array of catering services, as well as bespoke butchery workshops for those looking to learn something a little different on their holiday.

Drove Orchards

Apple orchard

Set in over 350 acres of orchards, farmland and meadows, a stone’s throw from the Norfolk coast, Drove Orchards is a welcoming farm shop, fishmonger and restaurant. Seasonal fruit and vegetables are grown in the orchards, and juices are made with fruit which is grown and pressed on-site. The shop also sells local meats and cheeses, breads, groceries, beers and wines, or you can let Drove’s skilled chefs do the cooking and choose from Eric’s Fish & Chips or Shuck’s yurt restaurant which sells rustic dishes whipped up from home-grown and local produce.

Visitors can even wander around the Heritage Orchards to discover the origins of the produce they are buying. Apples, pears, plums, gages, strawberries, currants, gooseberries and other seasonal fruit and veg are grown here, some of which can be picked and purchased yourself for ultimate freshness.

In the farm shop, ‘real food’ comes directly from producers in Norfolk and Suffolk with many crops grown right there on the farm. Other products include meat, bread, baked goods, pies, confectionery, milk, eggs, ice cream, pasta, flour and more, with seasonal items topping up the shelves throughout the year.
